A Brief History of Snellville

In 1879, two friends from London, Thomas Snell and James Sawyer, opened a small business together in a tiny settlement known as New London. Their joint venture, Snell and Sawyer’s Store, soon became prosperous, attracting patrons from nearby settlements and towns. While it is unclear exactly when New London officially became Snellville, the store was referred to as Snellville in their advertisements, and the town soon showed a promising future. Over time, other businesses and residences sprung up in the area, and the town has been officially recognized by the state of Georgia since 1940. The original store was sadly destroyed in 1960 and has since been replaced by a service station.
